Here are some bird book and product reviews from magazines and journals published in February, 2008.
Bird Watcher’s Digest
- Vol. 30 No. 4, March/April 2008- National Wildlife Federation Field Guide to Birds of North America
, by Edward S. Brinkley
Highly recommended by the reviewer. I happen to agree - it is worth having as a supplemental photographic field guide. - Whose Bird? Common Bird Names and the People They Commemorate
, by Bo Beolens
“A delightful reference, and a great way to learn about ornithological history” - Wingscapes BirdCam
An enthusiastic review of this inventive device. It’s getting rave reviews around the internet, and has me intrigued.
Living Bird
- Winter 2008- Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding
, by Scott Weidensaul
The Life of the Skies, by Jonathan Rosen
The reviewer sees these as complementary, as both deal with the history of birding, and recommends them both.
Both reviews are currently available in full online at the Living Bird website: Of a Feather; The Life of the Skies - Wingscapes BirdCam
And another thumbs-up for this product.
WildBird
- March/April 2008- National Geographic Birding Essentials
, by Jonathan Alderfer and Jon L. Dunn
This “great introduction to the fundamentals of birding” gets a good recommendation. - Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die: Birding Experts Share The World’s Greatest Destinations
, by Chris Santella
“A fun account of a number of the world’s premier birding destinations.” - Oology and Ralph’s Talking Eggs: Bird Conservation Comes Out of Its Shell
, by Carrol L. Henderson
Deals with oology (egg collecting), and its connection with conservation. Would be of interest to those interested in birding’s history, but the text is “interesting but a bit laborious”.
